The Indian film and television industry is going all out to attract viewers and promote its movies, with an innovative draft network being touted as a new model.
The idea of a draft network is being touted by some as the answer to the woes of the traditional broadcast and cable networks and to get viewers to tune in to what they are watching.
The idea is to give the viewers a window into the content being shown and make them feel like they are participating in the production.
With a network, they can then watch what is happening in the studio.
“We have all kinds people from every walk of life here.
But there is a common thread and this is the backbone of the idea of the draft network,” said Vicky Bhattacharya, the managing director of Viacom India.
“It’s a network that gives you an opportunity to sit and watch your favourite show and know what is going on behind the scenes,” said a senior official at a company that runs the network.
The network has been launched in New Delhi and Mumbai and the film industry is expected to get involved in the programme.
It is being billed as a way to engage with people in the entertainment industry to get them to tune into shows and movies, said Bhattachearya.
“There is an opportunity for the film and TV industry to be engaged in creating new content.
We are working with film producers and television companies and the network is just a great platform for them to showcase their works to the world,” she added.
The initiative is being launched by Viacoms’ entertainment arm, Viacam, which has been running a series of film festivals in India and the US and plans to start a new one in the country.
The programme will feature the films of some of the biggest names in the film business and feature them as part of the network, which will be available on ViacAM.
“Viacom’s film and tv channel has the potential to grow beyond its current footprint in India,” said an industry executive.
“We have a vision to create a global digital platform that will give the fans the opportunity to watch the films that are being made,” he added.
