Federal investigators have begun investigating President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, and two other Trump associates.
The New York Times first reported the probe on Friday.
It also cited a senior law enforcement official as saying the Justice Department has subpoenaed documents from three Trump associates and three Trump campaign aides.
The New York Attorney General’s office said in a statement that the investigation “has been opened for a review to determine whether there is evidence of violations of the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause, which prohibits federal officials from accepting gifts from foreign governments or entities.”
Flynn was paid by a Turkish government-linked company in 2016 for work he did for the Turkish government.
Flynn, who resigned from the White House in February, has been subpoenaed to appear before the House Intelligence Committee, the Times reported.
The Trump White House has not responded to a request for comment.
Two other Trump aides have also been subpoenased to appear.
CNN reported on Friday that Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his communications with Russia’s ambassador in 2016.
Flynn was charged with making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, according to a statement from the Justice Dept. “Fatefully, he pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation,” CNN reported.
According to CNN, Flynn’s guilty plea “has not been entered into the court file.
We are still waiting on a letter from the government in Turkey that will formally ask that Flynn be extradited to the United Kingdom.
That could take months.”
According the New York Post, the FBI has also been probing Trump’s transition team and other campaign officials.
A senior Trump adviser told the Times the investigation is “a very serious matter” that “is being handled very quickly” and has “nothing to do with politics or the presidency.”
A New York prosecutor told the Post the investigation into Flynn’s actions is “ongoing and has been going on for several months.”
